The software industry is dominated by fads. Generally these fads appear in times of difficulty and are hailed as powerful medicine that will cure all our problems. The latest fad fills our magazines and is on everyone's lips; and whether it is appropriate or not, we adopt it to show that we are part of the latest trend. After all, we don't want to be called old-fashioned!

Technology moves faster than we can sometimes cope with—it's exciting and challenging, but this speed of change interferes with our plans, our skills, and our delivered solutions. Our project plans have to be designed to accommodate change, our skill levels fluctuate with each technology upgrade, and our delivered solutions often fail to meet the demands of the new business realities.

Software development demands that developers and managers are creative, inventive, and thoughtful. Instead we are rushed through a hectic set of deadlines and perhaps with heroic efforts the solution is delivered on-time and probably over-budget.

Yet successful solutions can be delivered on-time and in budget. There is no powerful medicine, no 'magic' bullet', only a change of mindset. A new mindset that accepts the changing nature of business and follows a way of working that delivers solutions quicker.
